Lucid Drone Technologies and T-Mobile partner on industrial spraying dronesWireless carrier T-Mobile has announced that Lucid Drone Technologies will use T-Mobile as the exclusive provider of Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity and management for Lucid’s fleet of industrial spraying drones. The two companies are collaborating to put maintenance teams and exterior cleaning companies out of harm’s way by using drones for high-risk facilities maintenance work, such as exterior soft-wash cleaning and high-rise window cleaning.

The two companies added that they plan to leverage T-Mobile’s 5G network in the future to fly drones beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) and add more data-intensive capabilities, such as video streaming.

The next generation of Lucid Drone Technologies’ industrial spraying drones, powered by T-Mobile for Business, can perform exterior washing for commercial building surfaces and windows. This includes areas such as outdoor stadiums and arenas, hotels, and university structures. The technology aims to make these tasks safer and allow maintenance teams to focus on other mission-critical work.

The use of the T-Mobile network will power capabilities for the drones, such as real-time sharing of flight data, battery utilization information, hardware diagnostics, and the delivery of firmware and software updates. In addition, the T-Mobile Control Center will give Lucid the ability to view and manage the connectivity of the drones. Automation and provisioning capabilities of the IoT platform also allow Lucid to accelerate deployment of its growing fleet, with near real-time visibility to all of the drones to monitor network conditions and device behavior.

Initially, T-Mobile for Business will deliver 4G LTE connectivity to Lucid, with the expectation of using the 5G network in the near future for advanced use cases, such as network operations center access, live streaming video and remote piloting. T-Mobile said it aims to push IoT to its full potential and “catapult adoption” to create new drone applications that would rely on low-latency, high-speed data, as well as real-time location and proximity-based services.

“At Lucid Drone Technologies, we are committed to providing robotic solutions that allow our customers to complete jobs that were once dull, dirty and dangerous in a safer, faster, and smarter way,” said Andrew Ashur, CEO of Lucid Drone Technologies. “T-Mobile not only allows us to provide our customers with the highest quality of real-time support and connectivity today, but they also have impressive 5G capabilities that allow us to push the frontier limits of responsible robotics.”
