RIA safety mobile robots400x275After more than four years of work and input from hundreds of industry experts, the Robotic Industries Association (RIA) has published the new American National Standard for safety requirements for industrial mobile robots. Known as R15.08 Part 1, the standard is a critical first step toward common guidelines in this growing sector of robotics, the RIA said.

ABB automotive 400x275For the first time on record, yearly orders of robots from non-automotive sectors surpassed automotive robot orders in North America, according to the Robotics Industries Association. In addition, fourth-quarter sales saw a surge in robotics sales, up more than 63% compared with the same quarter in 2019.

OttoMotors400x275Canadian-based Clearpath Robotics has announced the completion of a $5 million Secure Convertible Note financing with BDC Capital Inc., as part of its bridge financing program. The funding, combined with Clearpath’s previously announced Series C financing, brings the total raised in 2020 to $43.4 million. Clearpath said the funds will be used for working capital, product development, and building out sales and marketing operations for the company and its OTTO Motors division.

walmart automationFollowing a successful pilot program in New Hampshire, Walmart has announced it will scale up the creation of local fulfillment centers (LFC) at its stores with technology partners in the robotics and automation space, including Alert Innovation, Dematic and Fabric.


Starship 1MillionDeliveries400x275Starship Technologies, which develops autonomous mobile robots for last-mile delivery of packages and food, announced it has completed 1 million autonomous deliveries, as well as raising an additional $17 million in funding.

IFR densityreport400x275The International Federation of Robotics said the average robot density in the manufacturing space hit a new global record of 113 units per 10,000 employees. Topping the list of the “most automated countries” are Singapore, South Korea, Japan and Germany. The U.S. remains in the top 10 countries, and China ranked 15th worldwide, the IFR said.

TRI Stanford Car 400x275The Toyota Research Institute (TRI) has chosen 13 additional academic institutions to participate in the next five-year phase of its collaborative research program. The goal of the program will expand the body of research into artificial intelligence with the goal of amplifying the human experience.

BearFlagRobotics400x275Bear Flag Robotics, which is developing autonomous technology for farm tractors, announced a $7.9 million seed extension funding round, led by True Ventures. Since founding the company in 2017, the company has raised $12.5 million in funding from investors.

RNDAutomation 400x275iAutomation, which designs and distributes automation products, solutions and services, announced the acquisition of Lakewood Ranch, Fla.-based RND Automation. The announcement was made by Saw Mill Capital Partners, which includes iAutomation as one of its portfolio companies. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Aurora PACCAR 400x275PACCAR and Aurora have signed a global, strategic agreement to develop, test, and commercialize autonomous Peterbilt and Kenworth trucks, the companies said in a statement. The collaboration will integrate PACCAR’s autonomous vehicle platform with the Aurora Driver system to enhance the safety and operational efficiency of PACCAR’s customers.

CruisePhoto400x275Cruise, which is developing self-driving, all-electric shared vehicles, and General Motors announced a long-term strategic relationship with Microsoft to accelerate the commercialization of self-driving vehicles. Microsoft joined GM, Honda and institutional investors in a combined new equity investment of more than $2 billion in Cruise, bringing the company’s post-money valuation to $30 billion.

ENWAY self driving sweepers 400x275Singapore’s National Environment Agency (NEA) announced that trial runs of the autonomous road sweeper known as “Donner” would soon begin on public roads to help make the city-state cleaner and more sustainable. The sweeper was developed by a consortium led by ENWAY and Bucher Municipal, and it has passed the Land Transport Authority’s approval test for autonomous vehicles for use on public roads.
